Closing Shop
Folks, I firstly want to say I appreciate all of the love and support you’ve given to SnK over the years. As a side project to Selkie, it’s been a fun ride to explore this world and these characters.
However, and given the sporadic nature of updates the last few months I doubt this will surprise some of you, but I need to announce a closure of updates to The Adventures of Sue and Kathryn.
I’ve been having a lot of trouble maintaining drive to work on it, due to dissatisfaction and due to some general time and energy management issues in other areas. I said to myself that I would try to bring the current Adventure to a conclusion before I made my decision and have been thinking on it for several months now, and cessation is where I’ve landed.
I may revisit the concept, world, and characters later. There’s changes, refinements, and rewrites I’d like to look at one day. But for now, I’m looking to reconsolidate some time and energy, and that means closing the book on SnK for now.
Thank you for your readership and support up to this point, it’s meant a lot. I’m sorry to be yet another unfinished webcomic on you all. But it’s just reached the point where this is the call I need to make for it.
Eventually I’ll probably sunset the website as a whole. However, before I do that I’m going to compile the comics somewhere, either in a PDF file to put up for download or (if it will fit), an imgur gallery so there’s a permanent archive somewhere. And I’m open to typing up an outline of what the intent/plans were for the rest of SnK, if anyone’s interested in at least seeing the rest of the intended story plan. Leave a note in the comments if this is something you’d like, and I can make the outline write-up part of the sunsetting package.
But for now, thank you, again, for everything. I’ll see you all on Selkie.
-Dave
I have been a long time lurker on your comics and greatly enjoyed them. However I understand that you need to do what is best for you and hope that you continue enjoy writing Selkie. Thank you for sharing more on the world of Sue and Kathryn with us.
I’m very sorry to hear that S&K is over, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. Between this or Selkie, I’m sure the choice was obvious. I would be mildly interested in a brief overview of the direction the story was going, but not pressingly.
That makes sense. You need to do what you need to do to keep yourself going, and sometimes that means knowing when to let go. I will miss this comic, so a text outline of where the plot was headed would be much appreciated!
Sad to see this one fold up! I think you have a couple good character’s with Sue and Kathryn. I would like to have a write-up when the time is right. Thanks Dave, looking forward to see where Selkie goes!
Ditto to the rest, and thanks.
Aw, darn. But it was “Selkie” that lured me in, and “Selkie” that lured me to “Sue and Kathryn,” so…continued good luck with “Selkie.”
Aw, goodbye Sue and Kathryn. I’ve read this from day 1 and most thoroughly enjoy their shenanigans. I understand what you’ve said and thanks for doing this for so long. I would be very interested to see the direction you had for them. That would be a much-appreciated sunsetting package. See you over at Selkie as usual, Dave!
I’m sorry that you need to close SnK, but I understand. I would very much like to read whatever notes you have about the story plans, when you have the time to post them. Thank you for having written such a fun series, I’ve enjoyed it.
Well, I’ll miss SnK, but I respect your decision. I’d like to see the plot outline, since you’re offering.
I am disappointed, but not entirely surprised. Will you at least tell us where the rest of the arc was going?
I second this. I would love to have at least a summary what the overall endgame was for the series.
ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I’m happy that you’re putting your health and stuff first ^__^
I always enjoyed S&K as an offshoot of Selkie. If one of these had to go I am hugely relieved for it to be S&K. I would be curious to see where the S&K story was going, though, since you’re willing to post it. Whenever you truly have time to put together that outline. No rush.
May I take a moment to giggle at your phrasing? “The sunsetting package” – given that the last published strip was where Kathryn says blowing up the Sun is “Plan B.” Maybe it’s just me but I thought that was funny. One last chuckle on the way out the door, as it were. 🙂
Thank you, Dave, for giving us this funny and amazing side project. We’ll support whatever the future holds for you!
I`ve for a long time been impressed at the amount of work you put in your comics and frequent updates, and I totally understand and support your decision. I have been enjoying the comics for years, and my favorite has always been Selkie. If one of them had to go, I am relieved Selkie is the one that will receive updates.
I would absolutely love an outline, if and when you have the time.
Take care of yourself, first and foremost 😊
Came to SnK late, but have really enjoyed it so far. You have made the correct choice; to have one project that soars rather than dividing your energy and have them both half stumble.
And besides, nothing says you can’t come back to SnK later. I would only want the outline if you had absolutely no plans to ever return to making Sue and Kathryn.
Thanks for the all you’ve done on this story. I’ll continue reading Selkie. And I would like to know what your plans were for the rest of this story.
Nooooo don’t close the whole website where will I go to read my Selkie and where will the story ennnddd. :'(
Sue and Kathryn in on a separate website with a separate URL. He’s only closing Sue and Kathryn, Selkie will still continue on.
Thank you for letting us know. If you have time and energy the outline would be great but take care of yourself foremost. Maybe post the PDF for sale?
Dave, like the other comments, thank you for keeping this one going, I hadn’t realized it was a side project, that’s how much I was enjoying it! I totally understand the fact that you need to re-prioritize, that is a powerful tool to keep your energy levels stable!
I too, would love to see what the final outline was going to look like, and I will continue to read Selkie, which I, found from HERE! Great reading for the last many moons!
Thanks for the fun till now, and get well. Take your time, this will stay in my bookmarks and if there will be a conclusion in whatever format you choose, i will appreciate it.
Sigh, disappointing that it stopped right smack dab in the middle of a story. I guess into the haitus/ended folder it goes.
Sorry to see ‘Sue and Kathryn’ end, but you’ve got to do what’s best for you. I would appreciate an outline of where things were planned to go if that gets posted.
Oh that’s a shame. I was enjoying this series. At least you said something unlike a lot of online artists.
I read with sadness, but also understanding. I have wondered for some time now how you were able to keep up with TWO very different series that updated so often and which had such interesting, well-planned, story lines. I would love to see that summary of where you planned to take this arc, etc and wish you all the best. I’ll be seeing you over at Selkie, reading with delight…
I very much want to see the Outline write-up! Your storytelling and art have come a long way. I have followed you silently since before my oldest was 8, and that was the age I introduced her. She’s 16 now! I would like one day to write you a long email telling you all about how important Selkie and SnK have been to me, with all the things I have gone through. Thanks for all of it, and I continue to follow longer than the path may lead.
Thank you for doing what you did as well as taking care of yourself. I would appreciate the type out of what you had for the storyline if it isn’t too much work.
I don’t know if there is a way to archive pages. The only thing I will say about that is if you ever put any clarifying information in the comments, it would be nice to include that with the copies, however you may do it. I don’t know if google docs would be better than imgur or a pdf. The main concern would be quality, since if there’s a lot of stuff, a download might reduce quality to save space, which would be a shame if your hard work got grainy.
Joke response: dang, the oracle wasn’t joking about cutting off the better timelines!
More serious response: I’m sad to see it go, but I can’t fault you for anything you said up there. You gotta do what’s right for you. It was a fun trip (especially the little references back into the main comic) and it added some flavor to everything that otherwise wouldn’t have been there.
I’d definitely be interested in where the story was going (I mean, I was reading regularly, I’d be more surprised if I suddenly DIDN’T want to know what was going to happen)
Is sadness. But you have to do what works for you – the last thing anybody wants is for a comic creator to drive themselves to burnout and end up unable to create ever again!
Please do write up your notes, I’m fascinated to have an idea where this story was going.
Maybe within the Selkie universe, the TV show was abruptly canceled in the middle of the story arc, too?
Also, I want Kathryn’s last line to be “Activate the Omega 13!”
In my mind, this will definitely be one of her lines!
I agree with what everyone else has said so far, i too loved the comic and am sorry it won’t be continued, and I’m also glad that you let us KNOW that you won’t be continuing it. I find that always spins me up when i get into a comic that just… Ends… and nothing is ever heard from them about WHY… as for getting the strips compiled… would you possibly think about putting the comic out as a print-on-demand book like you did for the Selkie books on Magcloud?
Well. This is a sad note, but also a glad note.
Thank you for the years of S&K, they were wonderfully odd, and oddly wonderful. I so appreciate you humor and little insinuendos, jokes for the kids and others for the grownups. All the bad guys have been, idunno, oddly original, and more like human driven aliens, and in that way relatable,… rather than alien driven humans and not understandable like Ambassador Kosh.
So thank you for this wonderful trip. I’m so glad you did this one too, it seems a whole OTHER aside to you, rather than a side project you tried. Some folks are a one trick artist, but you did a whole other strip with a completely different art style, different color factors (B&W), and one that didn’t intersect nor compete with the art of Selkie, and for that you have my total and undying admiration. In the “before-times” it seems that everyone had more energy. And as I go from middle-aged to Senior-WTF?-how old? I too am cutting out other art projects and focusing on just one or two.
Also I admire the up-right—do-right attitude you have toward your readers. That moral fiber that shows everywhere in your works, not blatantly but always present, makes you one of the best cartoonists out there. Long-life, energy and love to you always. Never forget; “Work pays the bills – but art feeds the soul.”

Well, I originally came here from Selkie, and initially hung in so I might understand references to Sue and Kathryn made in Selkie. The series did improve over time, and although it’ll be sad to see it go I’m definitely more interested in Selkie and where Selkie is going.
I’d appreciate an update over on Sue and Kathryn for when the archived version is stored where ever it goes, when the final outline is available, and for if you ever revive the series. The early story lines could definitely use a remake some day, maybe for when Selkie is telling her own kids about Sue and Kathryn.
I wish you lots of regained energy and time, so that you can keep giving us such a wonderful story over on Selkie
Hopefully we see them again someday in Selkie. That’s how they started.
Actually it’d be pretty funny if Dave had the cartoon canceled in Selkie.
