The Mythbusters did an experiment on that and the elephant seemed to be scared, but I think it was more startled by the way they revealed the mouse than the mouse itself. 😛
While they did test the method of reveal without the mouse to see if that was the problem, I could see an elephant being freaked out specifically by the two factors together.
It occurred to me sometime this morning while I was struggling with art and cats, to wonder if part of the appeal of Sue and Kathryn for Selkie is that they, like her, represent an ‘out group’ relative to humans…and a fellow predatory out group, at that. They’re weird, but they’re her /kind/ of weird.
Different universes, don’t expect elvish were-elephants to pop up in Calumet City anytime soon. 😉
As far is this strip’s relation to the Sue and Kathryn that Selkie loves to watch, this strip is not “a cartoon that Selkie is watching” in that sense. As a story it’s stand alone from Selkie and not intended to tie-in directly, although I’m not opposed to slipping some small references in (a stuffed Were-Elephant plush on her bed, for example) down the line since SnK is an established cartoon in Selkieverse. The reverse won’t hold true though; there are no Sarnothi in the SnK universe.
Elephants aren’t really afraid of mice, I heard a zoo elephant once shared it’s apple with a mouse.
Kinda like how dogs and cats can become friends. Or how sometimes it’s the cat that chases the dog.
Old wives tales ftl

I have no idea why that last panel made me laugh as much as it did. Nor why I find Kathryn so adorable and have the urge to hug her. owo

Very good point: Selkie totally can identify with those two.
Any kid who’s ever been on the outside of a social group, likely can, but more so for Selkie.
…are Selkieverse and S&K entirely separate, or is S&K sort of the animation Selkie watches from TV, or what? I’m fine any which way, just curious now.
