Ummm, sorry to be a buzzkill, but if that song is under copyright, you may have a hard time selling this story line in book form. Worth bringing up with your publisher if/when.
I actually had no idea before looking it up that it comes from The Sound of Music. I thought it was a public domain song. Well… a bridge to cross later, I suppose.
Isn’t there some clause for “entertainment reasons” or “parody” or something like that. I know South Park makers got away with using Mickey Mouse, because they went so completely overboard with it.

David Willis (Of Dumbing of age, Roomies!, etc) had a character singing this same song, so I am sure there is a way around it.
