i´m making a wild guess saying that sue´s childhood wasn´t a particulary loving one, caue her dad – if thats his true personality – strikes me more as a violent bully….if so, the apple fell amazingly wide from the tree!
however, i can´t help but wonder why he/all three of their parents are wearing masks – a hint that they´re not the real deal or is it merely ‘fashionable’ to wear masks in hell to honour their masked boss?
I think the masks might be how the Bringer of Dawn is controlling them. Unless these are puppets shaped like their parents (which I really hope is the case b/c I don’t want their parents to have deserved Hell).
I’m guessing Kathryn’s death wasn’t entirely accidental… I’d go back to the strip where she talked about it, but there’s no archive, and I don’t feel like searching through 300-some pages to find it.
No. Katheryn. She was reading by candlelight, fell asleep, and the house burned down, if memory serves. Plenty could have happened between falling asleep and the house burning down. Would certainly explain why her parents are in Hell. Sue’s dad was probably abusive, Henry’s was a pirate, but we have no other explanation for what Kathryn’s parents are doing in Damnation.
remember, Lucy is supposed to be the “father of lies” so he may have lied to the kids about these being the actual parents. Hence the mask. Although didn’t Sue say something about not remembering much before her afterlife?
I’m guessing she doesn’t really remember him. But doesn’t like being told that she’s doing something wrong. Cuz I’d ask what was wrong with someone I didn’t know too if they swung a club at me.
Never commented, despte reading this and Selkie for a while now, but… I get the feeling that… Sue’s father apparently died went to Hell. Sue died at eight years old. Sue’s father’s responce to seeing her was to yell that she’s been acting up again and try and beat the Hell out of her with a club.
While it’s possible that this is a puppet or brainwashed soul… I kind of get the feeling that Sue’s death was child abuse related.
I remember seeing Superman and Batman confronted by what seemed to be their parents intent on doing violent harm. I wonder if this episode was inspired by that.
Also, this is getting a bit disturbing for a kid cartoon show.
Not sure sure on the last one. Care Bears fought the devil in the 1980s in their 2nd movie, and dealt with little kids wanting to suicide. Thomas the Train has the older trains dismembered slowly in a scrapyard. So having the devil have the plucky undead heros fight their apparently horribly evil parents in hell seems tame for an “edgier” current cartoon. (And I loved Care Bears when I was 5, and watched the heck out of their movies. I have never bought into all cartoons of the 80s are the devil’s work!)
I’m a bit confused by this one. What is Thomas saying “Susie-Q” when Sue doesn’t have a Q in her name? Also, which half of Hensu is speaking? I’d expect that Sue would respond, bu the thinner speech bubble looks like Henri.
It took me until tonight to figure out those were the protagonists parents and not the devils children, (sorry bringer of dawn) and the funny thing is this morning me and my mom were listen to a story and when the protagonist/narrator said “boiling over” metaphorically I figured out almost immediately that he meant with money and not with rage, I think it took my mom longer. Anyway I’m confused that Sue remembers here birth parents, I guess I was already thinking of the carrot guy being here parent.

DX Susie Q…eesh. I don’t need to know more about him. Also Kathyrn’s parents remind me of Hellraiser D=

Sue’s death you mean? Kathryn was from reading by candle light and the house burned down.

Sue doesn’t remember much of anything from when she was alive, but she must have been a Buffy fan. Nothing says ‘Cordelia’ like “Whats your damage?”
“Whats” -> “What’s” (blaaarg!)

It’s an old song name.
