I don’t know if I would exactly consider “Bad. Mine. Leave. Kill.” that high on the intelligence level. Talking about being insulted on the other hand, requires a lot more complex thought. Even bugs and plants have some level of communication with each other, and with the involvement of a translation spell, it could be possible to understand that. That being said, knowing that creatures communicate with each other vs being able to understand what they are saying probably generate different emotional responses.
I can easily believe Sue got it wrong, but being able to talk indicates the sauro-avian is sapient, not just sentient.
